A gunman armed with an assault rifle killed 50 people at Pulse gay nightclub in Orlando yesterday in the worst mass shooting in US modern history. Police killed the shooter at the nightclub, who was identified as Omar Mateen , a 29-year-old Florida resident and US citizen.
Following this, FACEBOOK has activated its “Safety Check” function for the first time in the United States after a gunman massacred 50 people at a nightclub in Orlando, Florida.
The Safety Cheque, first introduced in October 2014, allows Facebook users to spread the word that they are safe in wake of a natural disaster or a crisis, and allows searches for those who might be in the affected area. Facebook launched this feature first in Japan due to the country’s propensity for natural disasters. The social network’s deployment of Safety Check has not been without controversy; Facebook had to explain why it was switched on for last year’s Paris attacks but not other contemporaneous incidents, and earlier this year accidentally sent out supposedly local alerts to people around the world after a bombing in Pakistan.
“Waking up this morning, I was horrified to hear about the shooting in Orlando. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and the LGBT community,” said Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg on his official account.
Meanwhile Social media critic, KEMI Olunloyo has condemned the killings saying “Islam is a sickening religion”
KEMI Olunloyo-Nigerian Social media critic.
The daughter of the former Oyo state governor took to her social media page on Twitter to write:
“Muslim terrorist. Omar called 911 to say he’s pledged allegiance to #ISIS then killed 50 and injured 53.”
“Islam is a religion of peace. That’s why the whole of Northern Nigeria is RESTING IN PEACE. F#ckn TERRORIST religion.”
“ISLAM IS A SICKENING RELIGION. U PRAY 5 TIMES DAILY YET U CAN PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO A TERRORIST GROUP, KILL 50 and injure 53. Burn ur KORAN”
“Mateen had been employed since 2007 as a security guard with G4S, a large multinational security company that provides services to more than two-dozen juvenile-detention facilities in Florida.” This private British-based firm and their contracts with the state of Florida should come under close scrutiny since this guy reportedly exhibited disturbing behavior in both his private and professional life, but nonetheless held a gun permit, residents complained. His wife said he wasn’t that religious which portrayed him as a normal person to her until he started abusing her physically.
Mateen’s father, Mir Seddique, told sources hat the sight of two men in Miami kissing angered his son.
“We are saying we are apologizing for the whole incident,” the father added. “We weren’t aware of any action he is taking. We are in shock like the whole country.”
The attack, he said, “has nothing to do with religion.”
But the father may not be the most credible of sources. He’s a supporter of the Afghan Taliban, according to investigative sources and he had been under FBI radar for at least two years.
