This is a rather sensitive story but earlier this week barely after the 2nd (second) phase of screening for new scouted players was concluded, 36 players were shortlisted for the final round however, 8 out of the stale players were dropped by Chief coach; Coach Samuel Abimbola.
In the early hours of Tuesday around 10am, men believed to be old players led by a tall and more senior player (name with-held), stormed the secretariat of the oldest club in the Nigerian national football League Gateway united FC, armed with cutlasses and a locally made pistol to protest why they were dropped by the FIFA certified coach.
The club went through a tumultuous 2015 league season where they barely scaled relegation by the whiskers.
The poor performance of the club was attributed to these same stale and nonchalant politically employed players and prior week technical tutelage from past coaches.
Coach Abimbola, the General Manager of the club Prince Adetunji Onatolu and the team manager Mr Tony SOLEYE stood up to the task by summoning the state Commissioner for youths and sports’ security personnel to round the players up and conduct an investigation into their barbaric act.
The Commissioner, Honourable Afolabi Afuape promised to deal with the players by delaying their sign-off entitlements till the investigation is completed.
He reteriorated that no gross indiscipline would be further tolerated with the new players that would be signed for 2016 football season.
He assured the technical team to go on with their work of thorough screening that would bring the team to premiership as mandated by the State Governor, Senator Ibikunle AMOSUN.
